A glacier is compressed snow, which turns to ice closer to the ground. The ice then is what slides slowly forward, carving the ground below it. The carving leaves a grayish dust that colors the water it washes into and forms a glacial valley when it recedes. And the blue color is caused by light refraction the sun. The ice absorbs all the light of the color spectrum and gives back a blue color... like the day sky. |
