I have seen Mt. St. Helens from the ground and been overwhelmed by the aftermath of its 1980 volcanic eruption. This perspective certainly adds to the awe. The eruption shortened the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft (2,950 m) to 8,365 ft (2,550 m).
