Fort Stevens was constructed during the Civil War and continued to guard the mouth of the Columbia River through World War II. From 1897 to 1904, eight concrete gun batteries were built. Although the guns have been removed, the battery foundation remain. It had rained most of the night. Nevertheless, we donned our hiking shoes and headed towards the Pacific Ocean two miles away.
