June 18: to Fort Stevens State Historic Site

South Beach State Park is like a parking lot with camping vehicles arranged side by side, separated with just enough lawn space to accommodate a picnic table and a couple of tents. A camping suburbia. Most are there for the beach. We stayed long enough for Peggy and Layla to hike some surrounding trails and me to ride my bike down and back on Highway 1. Then we packed up and headed north to Fort Stevens SP. Recommended side trip: Three Capes Scenic Route.

June 19: Fort Stevens gun batteries, a cool (but wet) hike, a shipwreck, a bald eagle, crossing the Astoria Bridge into Washington to Seaquest State Park
