Named after Joshua Hendy, an Englishman who came to California in 1849-- not to find gold, but to make the iron tools for those who wanted to. Hendy also started a number of successful lumber mills supplied by his large holdings of forests of redwoods. Fortunately, Hendy was able to preserve a few of the ancient redwood groves which make up the 845-acre park.
