Cinder cones form inside the larger crater aftermath of a volcano. Note the four cones in the Haleakala crater. Here are their stories according to Hawaiian mythology: 1) Pu'u o Maui (Hill of Maui).. Maui, the demigod, is known throughout Polynesia as the trickster, 2) Pu'u o Pele (Hill of Pele), 3) Kamoali'i (The chiefly stones), and 4) Ka Lu'u o ka 'O'o (Plunge of the digging stick).. Pele was the keeper of the fire. She took her magic digging stick to Haleakala and created many cinder cones. |
