For the day's itinerary, we decided to follow 311 down to where the road ends just past Makena at the Ahihi Kina'u Natural Area Reserve… and explore everything in between, like a memorial of some sort nestled into a tree near the last resort on the dead end road. From there we explored a couple of turnoffs to various beaches that make up Makena State Park, including popular Big Beach. Lots of people. We looked and continued down the road. Ahihi Kina'u Natural Area Reserve is essentially a lava field. Once we reached the end of the road, we parked and hiked a ways down the King's Trail. It follows a coastline of mostly rocky (volcanic) beaches and stands of Kiawa trees. The trail itself is quite rocky and sturdy shoes are recommended. There was also lots of evidence of walls made from the lava rock… remnants of the Keoneoio Village, a 65-acre historic district. Some of the lava-rock walls date back about 500 years. We also saw some goats… |
