Day 5: July 12, 2011

Most of Acadia National Park is located on Mount Desert Island. As the story about the island's name, "French explorer Samuel de Champlain's observation that the summits of the island's mountains were free of vegetation as seen from the sea led him to call the island "île des Monts Déserts", or island of the Bare Mountains." According to Wikipedia. Anyway...

The green lines highlight the Park Loop Road. This mostly one-way road is 27 miles long and was built between 1922 and the 1950's.
