Day 5: July 12, 2011

Between 1913 and 1940, John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed and directed the building of a 57-mile network of carriage roads and stone bridges for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and carriages. Granite was quarried from Mount Desert Island by construction crews for road material and bridge facing. Why? Because he had the money and wanted to preserve the natural beauty of the park.
