Explore Ohrid, boat ride to Bay of the Bones "Museum on Water". --OAT: "Set on the shores of Lake Ohrid, the lakeside town is one of Europe's oldest human settlements." The day started cold and rainy, but by late morning, the sun had emerged leaving wispy cloud banks and fresh snow on the tops of the surrounding mountains around Lake Ohrid. We started the day walking through the narrow streets with a visit to the Holy Mother of God Peribleptos Church, dating back to the 1200's. The iconic frescos on the inside walls and ceiling were amazing (no photographs were allowed). More amazing was the restoration process… they had been covered by black smoke from candles over the centuries. The highlight of the day for me was a boat ride out onto the lake to the Bay of Bones and its Museum on Water. It's an open-air reconstruction of a Neolithic lake dwelling based on artifacts found in the surrounding lake bed. The boat ride itself over the clear waters and shoreline were quite photogenic. It was pizza for lunch at a local eatery, a visit to a paper-making shop using one of two replicas of Gutenberg's 15th century printing press, and a walk on a boardwalk to the Church of St. John of Kaneo and Samuel's Fortress… good day.
