The duty of revenge was a major issue in Icelandic sagas and in the life of Eirik the Red. Murder among family, friends, and neighbors was common. Punishment was usually a large fine or exile for three years. During exile, you can be killed by anyone without consequence. More severe crimes, like two murders, were met with the exile from the country altogether. Eirik killed two people and exiled himself to Greenland knowing that if he stayed in Iceland, he would be killed.
