Discover Snaefellsnes Peninsula

The day started and ended in the town of Stykkisholmur, as we took the tour bus around the Snaefellsnes peninsula. Although it was very windy and chilly with intermittent rain, we made frequent stops and trekked along the coastal headlines and lava beaches. Other sights included a church in Buddir originally built in 1703 that was later demolished and rebuilt… and rebuilt again in 1848 and still stands today.

We had lunch at a small cafe in a renovated fishing shed in the town of Dritvik, and checked out a couple of cool sculptures. There was the imposing figure of Bardur Snaefellsas, guardian spirit and deity of Mt. Snaefell, and Guoridur Porbjarnardottir, one of the most famous, well-traveled women of Icelandic history. She was the mother of the first white man born in North America (Vinland) in the early 11th century.

The day's tour also included a drive around Church Mountain, famous for its perfect symmetry from all angles. A stop at Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall pouring down from the coastal mountains…
