Visit to an aquarium and museum - Transfer to Reykjavik

Woke up to a rainy and blustery-cold day on Heimaey. After breakfast, we added another layer and donned our rain gear before heading to the Sagnheimar Aquarium. In a second room were taxidermied fish and birds, and a natural history display in a third room. The highlight of the visit was a rescued, live puffin brought out and placed on a table for us to observe and take pictures/video of. The puffin is now too acclimated to humans to be put back into the wild.

We then visited the Sagnheimer History Museum which had more photography from the Eldfell eruption and artifacts and illustrations from various time periods of the Westman Islands.

The plan was a 25 minute, mid-afternoon plane ride to Reykjavik to continue our Iceland adventure. The inclement weather, however, grounded the local airport. Plan B was another ferry ride back to Landeyjarhofn Harbor on the mainland and a two and a half hour bus ride to Reykjavik… again, inclement weather (and a roiling sea) forced the ferry to head farther west to Porlakshofn Harbor about two and a half hours farther away. Fortunately, Gulli was able to contact our bus connection of the change in plans.

Dinner reservations also had to be rescheduled for 8:30 instead of 6:30, but our room in the Hilton Hotel in Reykjavik was plush and comfortable… and we would be there for 3 nights.
