After traveling through miles and miles of lichen-covered lava with no structures or side roads, we stopped in the town of Grindavik, which is home to one of the most treacherous fishing harbors in Iceland. We visited the local volunteer search and rescue unit... the Bjorgunarsveit. Formed in 1928, these units are all over Iceland and average 8,000 missions a year. Note: there is no "911" in Iceland, no government, national guard or military rescue units. It is all voluntary.
