On the way back to Akureyri, we stopped at Thorgeirshirkja, a church that Gulli, the architect, had designed 20 years ago. It was commissioned and built to honor the 1000th anniversary of Christianity. Not huge, ornate, and horizon-dominating like the Hallgrímskirkja Cathedral in urban Reykjavik, but simple and elegant with vast Icelandic landscapes all around.
