This is a sculpture near the visitor center done by the late Emma Kauhi. The piece is called Ulumau Pohaku Pele (ever-growing rock of Pele). Pele was/is the goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. According to Hawaiian beliefs, one should be respectful of these wahi kapu (sacred areas) and their creators. Looking closely at the sculpture, you can see the face and swirling hair of Pele.
