| As we descended the Chain of Craters Road, we saw sweeping vistas of the coastline, and miles and miles of hardened lava. The road once connected to Highways 130 and 137, which looped back to Hilo. Lava flows closed it in 1969, but it was rerouted in 1979... only to have 9 miles of the road buried by lava from Kilauea in 1987. |
