The Knossos Archaeological Site in Heraklion, the ruins of a 1,300-room, Bronze Age palace revealing insights into the Minoan civilization.

Last full day on the island of Crete. I had been eager to see the Palace of Knossos in Heraklion and learn more about the ancient Minoans of Crete. The palace complex is considered to be Europe's oldest city. We had another guide who arranged to have us enter the excavated site about mid-morning to avoid the touring masses from cruise ships. It made the visit much more enjoyable, as well as providing a better photo opportunity. Discovered only in the last 125 years by Sir Arthur Evans, the excavations and restoration process continues.

After yet another delicious meal for lunch, we then explored Minoan artifacts at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Photography was allowed without a flash.

Tomorrow we are back on a couple of planes to Thessaloniki in northern Greece…
