Our walk's turn-around point was the white tower. The Byzantines built the original tower in the 12th century... and it was reconstructed by the Ottoman Empire in the 14th. Owing to the "countless victims of Ottoman torturers and executioners", the tower acquired the name "Tower of Blood" or "Red Tower", a name which it kept through most of the 19th century.
