On another tour, we had an elderly British docent who was quite knowledgeable about various items in various rooms. What I remember of the large painting on the left is the girl grabbing onto the women's dress. Apparently she did not want to be part of the painting and was coerced by another girl with a mask... which frightened the reluctant girl. The artist liked the effect and included it. The painting on the right depicts the 9th duke who married an American railroad heiress strictly for her money. Our docent pointed out that the duke was significantly shorter than his wife and instructed the painter to make it appear that the duke had stepped down one step (note his leg). Oh, and there was reference to the their two sons. The one in the middle would become the 10th duke. The younger one on the right... actually, the two sons were refered to as the heir and the spare.
