Four black granite figures of the goddess Sakhmet, 18th Dynasty, about 1400 BC, from Thebes. Sakhmet was a leonine goddess who was regarded by the Egyptians as a bringer of destruction to the enemies of the sun-god Re. King Amenophis III was quite fond of Sakhmet, having had an enormous quantity of the statues erected in his mortuary Temple of Mut at Karnak. Nearly 600 of these statues have been accounted for so far.
