The Tower Bridge was built between 1886 and 1894 and crosses the River Thames near the Tower of London... which is where it takes its name. It is crossed by over 40,000 people (motorists, cyclists and pedestrians) every day. The divided road between the towers swivels up from the middle to let allow tall ships to pass through. The higher walkway above has an interesting story. It had gained an unpleasant reputation as a haunt for prostitutes and pickpockets. As they were only accessible by stairs, they were seldom used by regular pedestrians, and were closed in 1910. The walkway reopened in 1982 as part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition, and charges admission to explain why and how Tower Bridge was built through the use of films, photos and interactive displays.
