In 1100, Ranulph Flambard, Bishop of Durham, was accused of fraud and imprisoned in the Tower by King Henry I. Legend states that in 1101 Flambard escaped by using a length of rope hidden in a large flagon of wine. While his guards got drunk on the wine, he successfully made his getaway.
