Finally got to do some laundry within the walls of York. We packed up our dirty clothes in a bag and backpack and walked to a local launderette. With help from the proprietor couple from Libya, we got it done. Then we walked down Shambles, the most visited street in Europe. We had a sandwich for lunch that cost only one pound, and had the good fortune to listen to John Innes, the people's tenor, sing in the town center, But…

York Minster was the highlight of the day. It's immense on the outside, but you don't get a true sense of its immensity until you're inside. I was standing there and looking up at the ceiling… and then at the center tower which extends even higher, and I was amazed that people were actually able to build it eight centuries ago. Oh, and then we paid 5 extra pounds to go up into one of the towers (highest point in York… even higher than the York wheel) and look down from the outside. Peggy and I did it all: inside tour, outside tour, underground tour, AND got to sit in on an Evensong service… all males, from boys to old men, singing the most amazing harmonies and well-practiced homilies in an amazing place.
