We drove back into England heading south from Scotland across one of the oldest borders in the world. And what a scenic drive it was over roads that rolled up and down and curved through green, sweeping landscapes all the way to the horizon. The weather continued to be very accommodating with intermittent clouds in an otherwise blue sky. We've been told a number of times that this is not the usual weather pattern. Hadrian's Wall was our primary destination for the day. Of course, the Roman-built wall stretched 80 miles from coast to coast in the early part of the first millennia, with forts every mile or so. We focused on one, the Housestead Fort, which has the most of its foundation left from that era. It was the wall I wanted to see, however. I not only saw it, I walked on it. |
