First full day in Edinburgh. It was a 1.8 mile hike to the Edinburgh Castle. a fortress which dominates the skyline of the city from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC, though the castle itself since the 12th century AD. Today, Edinburgh Castle is Scotland's most-visited paid tourist attraction, with over 1.3 million visitors in 2011. And, yeah, it was crowded when we visited.

The Royal Mile is the name given to a succession of streets forming the main thoroughfare from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood House, the Queen of England's residence on her annual visit to Scotland. Today, the Royal Mile is an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, pubs and visitor attractions.
