First significant wet weather we've had since the second day in Great Britain. As the locals have told us, the weather has been unusually mild and sunny for this part of the world. "We brought California weather with us," we offered. Sure enough, as the day progressed and we made our way to Carlisle, just short of the Scotland border, the sky cleared and it was sunny again.

After finding the Cambro House Bed and Breakfast and dropping off our bags, we headed towards the Carlisle town centre, a brick walkway between shops. It was busy with all generations of people milling and hanging about, similar to the mall scene back in California.

Our first stop was the Carlisle Cathedral, dating back to 1122. It is one of the smallest cathedrals in England. The word cathedral comes from "cathedra". which means "bishop's chair". A cathedral, whatever shape or size is the 'seat' of the bishop and a center of worship. The Carlisle Castle is over 900 years old and, due to its proximity to the border of England and Scotland, has been the center of many wars and invasions.
