Rokeby Bed and Breakfast in Salisbury. One of the nicer B & B's in Great Britain. We woke up in the morning (well, sort of.. still working with the time difference between hemispheres) and went downstairs for the first of two 'breakfast' parts of our two-day stay. Peggy and I each ordered salmon and scrambled eggs. Delicious… along with some fresh fruit and toast.

Then it was back in the 'backwards' car to Stonehenge. Actually, as the day progressed, I began to feel more comfortable with the 'different' driving conditions of Great Britain… different lines in the road, side of the road to drive on, clockwise instead of counter on the roundabouts, narrow roads, etc. Anyway, Stonehenge…

Huge tourist attraction. Lots of tour buses and lots of tourists both from afar and local. It costs eight pounds apiece to walk a path around this rumored 4,000 year old Druid artifact of erected stones weighing many tons. Something to do with time and calendars and their position in relation to sun direction. Used to be able to walk among the stones, but the preservation of the stones and lure of tourist dollars has taken away that privilege.

Then it was off to another ancient stone alignment near the village of Avebury. Much larger in that the erected stone-age stones were further apart, covering a larger area. Current archeological interpretation believes the stones were more likely to have been used for some form of ritual or ceremony. The small village of Avebury itself was also interesting to walk about. Of particular interest was the Avebury Manor and its surrounding gardens. It was originally built in the 16th century and restored in the early part of the 20th.

Then it was back to Salisbury. We parked the car at the B & B and walked back into town to visit the 750 year old Salisbury Cathedral. It has the tallest steeple of any cathedral in Great Britain. Impressive from the outside, it was also quite impressive from the inside. High vaulted, ornately crafted ceilings with lots of stained glass and statuary. Of particular interest to me were the above-ground tombs of reknowned people associated with the cathedral and British royalty.

A couple of pints of English ale and glasses of wine at The Clough and dinner at Strada… a walk through the narrow streets of Salisbury back to Rokeby. Saw lots of things… we'll see more tomorrow.
