Highway 58, starting in Barstow, will take you by Edwards Air Force Base in the Mohave Desert, through Bakersfield and some oil fields, and eventually to Highway 101 near Santa Margarita. After the oil fields, you will encounter a sign informing you that there are no services for the next 75 miles. The road then begins to climb and wind its way up and over the Tehachapi Mountains to the bucolic beauty of the Carizzo Plains beyond.
