Galveston Island State Park to Sam Houston Jones State Park in Louisiana: 197 miles
We were fortunate indeed to have the privilege of listening to Joe and Katie play their brand of folk music for us at Galveston Island SP last night. They are very talented musicians who like to travel around the country to play and participate at various folk happenings. Perhaps we will run into them again sometime.
The last time we had seen a sunrise over an ocean was in New Zealand during the summer of 2004. It was beautiful sunrise over the Pacific ocean off the east coast of the north island north of the city of Napier. Now we've seen the sun rise over the Gulf of Mexico.
The Graekle. It's a black bird with a long tail common to this part of the country. Very intelligent birds, smaller than a crow, but having the same precocious nature. I had been trying to get a good shot of a Graekle and finally did at a wetland preserve across the highway from the park.
As we drove northeast on Highway 3005 into Galveston proper, we got to see the touristy part of Galveston. Lots of hotels and eateries and 'groomed' beaches. This part of the highway is appropriately named Seawall Blvd. There is a 6-foot curved wall separating the beach from the road. This road can be taken to the end of the island at Apffel Park. We stopped at the park to let Layla run for bit on the beach and watch the big oil tankers make their way up the channel between Port Bolivar on the mainland and Galveston. We then caught the Bolivar Free Ferry to cross that channel to continue our journey east into Lousiana...

After checking into Sam Houston Jones SP, we received a phone call from friends back in Modesto informing us that there was a "plumbing" problem at our house. Over a 5-hour period of numerous cell phone interchanges, it was determined that the plumbing was not the problem...
So, as of this writing (June 24, 2007) I am being put up at the Red Lion Hotel by the city of Modesto, eager to fly back to Texas to get Peggy, Layla, and the FED back to Modesto, and get our house fixed...
