South Llano River State Park to Bastrop State Park, just east of Austin: 183 miles
We recommend South Llano River State Park... nice facilities, gracious campground hosts, and some great trails.
Only 20 miles of Interstate 10 before heading east on Highway 290 to Fredericksburg and through the "hill country" of Texas, originally settled by German immigrants. Beautiful rolling landscapes and tidy properties and towns along the way. Cruising down the main drag of Fredericksburg, there were a lot of old style store fronts beckoning the passer-by to stop and shop. We stopped long enough to have lunch and update the website at a bakery and ice cream shop. We managed to get by and through the freeway network of Austin and stop for the night at Bastrop State Park, nestled in the last stand of loblolly pines in Texas.
