Leasburg Dam State Park to Whites City RV park: 267 miles

From Leasburg, we headed south to Las Cruces to catch Highway 70 northeast to Alamogordo... another 'interesting road.' Another climb through the San Andres mountain range and down the other side found us descending into an immense desert expanse called the White Sands Missile Range. Didn't see any missiles this day, but there were signs along the fenced-in highway to recommend against any excursions.

And I am curious about any history of an area I'm passing through, so I do stop at 'points of historical interest...' and saw this roadside sign...

White Sands National Monument. What an amazing place of gypsum-based sand dunes. It's an 8-mile driving tour off Highway 70 just before arriving in Holloman AFB and Alamogordo. HOT and, yeah, you gotta get out of the vehicle and check out the sand and surrounding landscape. It's definitely white so wear some dark shades.

Other scenes along the way...
