FED across the U.S.
Most of the drive from Los Osos to San Diego was on Highway 101. From Santa Maria, however, there is a cool road called Foxyn Canyon that travels through some of the wine country that was featured in the movie, "Sideways." The road loops around for about 25 miles back to 101 near Santa Barbara.
Freeway driving in southern California... lots of traffic with strip malls, subdivisions, fast food, gas stations, and other establishments along the way that cater to a society on wheels. We arrived in the San Diego area around 6pm and had dinner with ELLEN and DAVE at the Gordon Biersh Brewery off Interstate 8. Then it was time to find a place to bed down for the night...
As we had heard and seen, Wal Mart allows overnight parking of RV's in their parking lots. So that was the plan: find a local Wal Mart to park the FED for the night. We found one at a mall, but parking lot security informed me that parking at this particular Wal Mart, located on private mall property, was not allowed. I then talked with 'mall' security who directed me to a 'stand-alone' Wal Mart in the nearby town of Santee where overnight parking is allowed. Remember that, Wal Mart campers...
The next morning we woke up for the first time in a parking lot. Worked out okay and, besides saving the money it would have cost to camp in a local RV park, we were next to a 24 hr. Wal Mart. So we picked up a few items we needed, packed up, battened things down in the FED and headed east in Interstate 8.
Of interest: Peggy took Layla for a walk in the morning and discovered that this Wal Mart was next to the San Diego river... such that it was.
