On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant officially signed into law Yellowstone National Park. It covers 3,500 square miles in mostly Wyoming, at the headwaters of the Yellowstone River from which it takes its historical name. The native Minnetaree name for the river was Mi tsi a-da-zi (Rock Yellow River). 18th century French fur trappers named the river Roche Jaune... to which American trappers later translated to Yellow Stone, hence the name. All of which can be attributed to the 'yellow' rocks seen at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowston River..

We had visited the park two years before and seen much of the wildlife and geothermal features (i.e. Old Faithful) that we would see again on this trip.
