The National Gallery of Art consists of two buildings. The West Building opened in 1941 with art collected by American financier and statesman, Andrew Mellon. Other collections followed and, by the 1960's, the gallery ran out of room. The East Building opened in 1978 and was paid for by Andrew Mellon's son and daughter.
