The Tidal Basin was built in 1897 to catch the overflow from the Potomac River and prevent flooding. Then in 1912, the Japanese government gave and planted cherry trees along the shores of the man-made lake. Between mid-March and mid-April for a two-week period, the cherry trees blossom-- attracting tens of thousands of people photographing the sight.
