Morning on our own - fly back to Santiago - fly to Buenos Aires tomorrow to begin main part of the trip... The Wilderness Beyond: Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Chilean Fjords

We were scheduled to leave for the Rapa Nui airport around noon. So after breakfast, Peggy and I went for a walk along the coast. We encountered a hotel with numerous black flags planted in front. Here’s the story. On Rapa Nui, land cannot be owned by someone who is not native to the island. Apparently, a non-native managed to finagle the system and purchase some land to build the hotel. The flags and various makeshift signs were posted by native Rapa Nui in protest.

The 4-hour fight back to Santiago was aboard another large plane with almost all seats taken. Moving the clock forward two hours, we shuttled back to the hotel in Santiago we had stayed at before flying to Easter Island. We ordered a salad and a glass of wine from room service and crashed shortly after midnight…
