Cape Horn was discovered and first rounded in 1616 by the Dutchman Willem Schouten, who named it Kaap Hoorn after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands. The Cape Horn Monument was inaugurated on December 5, 1992. It was erected by the Chilean chapter of the Chilean Association of Cape Horniers in the memory of the seamen from every nation who perished in the battle against inclemency of nature in the southern seas around the legendary Cape Horn. The two halves of the monument make the shape of an Albatross: according to myth each Albatross is the soul of a sailor lost at sea. <<< | >>>
