June 24: Juneau, AK, and the Mendenhall Glacier
There are no roads to Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Although other ways are possible, one has to fly and land at the international airport or take a boat. There has been talk of building a road, but I get the feeling that the local people like it the way it is. The highlight of this port-of-call was a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier... of which Peggy was able to save us about $70 by buying a shuttle ticket on shore instead of on the boat. Not only that, but our shuttle bus driver, Thomas, entertained us with his local wit, knowledge and charm the entire 30 mile round trip to and from the glacier.
