Because the Wawona Tunnel Tree in Yosemite was a popular tourist attraction in the 1880's, the owners of the the owners of the North Grove (in what is now Calaveras Big Trees SP) decided to carve out one of the Calaveras trees. They got their tunnel, but unfortunately nearly killed the tree.
