June 17, 2006: Sonora Pass (9,624') had obviously not been open for very long. At Kennedy Meadows there is a sign stating that you will encounter 26% grades along the next nine miles of road. I knew this and had always wanted to attempt this stretch of road. Fortunately, the weather was cool and, after eating a few apple wedges, I perservered and was able to grunt my way to the top.
History of Kennedy Meadows - Sonora Mono Toll Road Route: Railtown State Historic Park in Jamestown > Highway 108 through Sonora, Twain Harte, MiWuk Village, and a stop at Strawberry for provisions > Kennedy Meadows > and up to Sonora Pass > and back the same way. Distance: 135 miles. |
